During road construction or widening in the hill side, sections of the hill side are cut away to reveal the inside section. Similarly, when there is some crumbling of the hill side after rain, the inside section of the hill starts to show. In this case, right next to a road, the section of the hill side has crumbled exposing the deep roots of the plants and trees along with rock. On hill sides, with more support needed for plants and trees, their roots can go deeper, many meters down, which is what can be seen in the photo. This is in the Western Ghats, in the district of Idukku, in Kerala in South India.
