2 key buildings in Singapore. One is the tallest hotel in Singapore, the Swissotel The Stamford, reaching a height of 226 meters and with a total of 1261 rooms was completed in the year 1986.
The other major building in the photo next to the hotel is the Esplanade - Theatres by the Bay. The Esplanade building is a very famous building in Singapore, opened to the public in 2002, and has a distinctive shape with a glass cover over the building. The building is locally compared to the shape of a tropical fruit called a durian, while others call the glass cover over the building to resemble the eye of a fly. The Esplanade has 2 main functions, serving as a concert hall with a seating of around 1600 people, while the theatre has seating of around 2000 people. The concert hall is designed to house upto 120 musicians and uses modern technology for the latest in accoustic engineering. The theatre is designe somewhat similar to the horseshoe shape of opera houses. In addition to these functions, the Esplanade building also houses the Jendela (a Malay word for window) which is an exhibition space typically used for the visual arts, there is a large library catering to the performing arts, and also an outdoors performing venue.
The Esplanade building is built near the mouth of the Singapore River on the Marina Bay, built over six hectares of land. The land was originally being used as a food place, discontinued after the construction of the building.
